Today I had a fun design challenge. I needed to take a photograph (that my wife took), and insert an illustration, and make it look like it was actually in the photo to begin with. Below you can see a few of the steps along the way.
This next one is the beginning stages (mock up of roughly where I needed everything to be laid out) Essentially taking a custom flat illustration made in Adobe illustrator® and creating a 3D image of the same dimensions and mapping the illustration on top (allowing me to rotate the graphic freely in space).
*This was looking pretty good, but you could tell that it was just an illustration laid on top of a photograph… not the end result I was needing.
… Almost there…
This is the final image (edited, color-corrected, and mapped to integrate into the overall graphic). I used a series of layers to get the effect, including: gradients, overlays, drop shadows, reflections, masks and blurs.
The overall time it took for this project (excluding the original creation of the album art illustration) was about six hours.
